The Best NYC Summer Concerts in 2018

Rivington Music believes seeing live music inspires us to play. Witnessing a truly fantastic live performance can have us wake up the next day feeling inspired and ready to play. The best summer concerts in 2018 are chock full of some incredible performers on national tours. We put together a list of the five shows we’re most excited about, along with links to buy tickets. Are you seeing any of these shows? Leave a comment below!

1. Janelle Monáe – Dirty Computer Tour

Dropping her album “Dirty Computer” less than a month ago, Janelle Monáe has truly pushed her progressive take on R&B, hip hop, and a tip of the hat to a few greats—can anyone say Prince?—to the limits.

Monáe’s shows are electrifying and theatrical. Her body of work largely narrates central stories that bring her albums together. This is something she is known for since her album “Metropolis: Suite 1” in 2007. The stage is flush with dancers, special effects, and her performance is truly a symbolic nod to her theater days. Definitely a must-see!

2. Weezer & The Pixies

These two indie music giants have teamed up for a major national tour sure to bring nostalgic hits like “Say It Ain’t So” and “Debaser” to tons of high-capacity venues.

Both bands released new music in the past few years, meaning, anybody seeing these shows should be familiar with recent releases.  They’ll get true value for their tickets. Weezer and The Pixies are known to bring intense energy to their live performances,. They are well at home in intimate venues and—in terms of this tour—big ticket arenas.

3. Steely Dan & The Doobie Brothers

Perhaps the most iconic and historic lineup this summer are Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers. They have come together for a 37-date national tour. With this much influence on one stage, it’s hard not to imagine how epic this show will be.

Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers quite literally dominated the scenes they inhabited in the 1960’s and 1970’s. They  rose to become the defining acts of their genres. Steely Dan positioned themselves as the vanguard of jazz-inspired rock pop, while The Doobie Brothers are the quintessence of blues-inspired rock and roll.

4. Childish Gambino – This is America Tour

Have you seen the music video for Childish Gambino’s “This is America”? Artfully done—and winner of most feathers ruffled this season— Donald Glover is getting ready to bring that intensity to the stage.

Glover’s performances are a reflection of his many talents—dance, singing, instrument playing, and working a crowd. His shows are not only a spectacle to behold, but a serious anthropological look into race and society. One of his shows is sure to be enlightening, electrifying, and awe-inspiring.

5. Queens of the Stone Age – Villians Tour

While we’re posting about summer concerts in 2018 around NYC, this tour is completely overseas. However, we can’t stress enough how much QOTSA’s new album Villians deserves credit.

Their first full-length release since 2013, Villians is for many a return and evolution of QOTSA’s old sound. Kicking photographers aside, their performances are high-energy and loaded with incredible guitar and synth tones, perfectly reproduced in a live setting.
